Our next event, Remembering the men from 1916 at The Mendicity Institution and Dr Steeven's Hospital

The Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society's next event on Sunday, May 5th, 2024, at 12pm. Hosted at the Mendicity Institution in Dublin. This annual event, organized with the Mendicity Garrison Relatives Association, has been a tradition since 2016 for us to commemorate.

It honors the brave men of the Fingal 5th Battalion and those who fought under Commandant Sean Heuston during Easter week in 1916, commemorating their sacrifices.

Those men who fought at The Mendicity Institution are:

Patrick J. Kelly from Lusk Company, who passed away on March 28, 1945, at the age of 48;

Richard Kelly, also from Lusk Company, who passed away on December 1, 1973, at the age of 78;

George Levin from B Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on December 19, 1957, at the age of 85;

James Marks from Fingal 5th Battalion, who passed away on December 16, 1939, at the age of 45;

Sean McLoughlin from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on February 13, 1960, at the age of 65.

William Meehan from Lusk Company, who passed away on July 22, 1975, at the age of 89;

William Murnane from G Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on August 27, 1956, at the age of 71; Joseph Norton from Fingal 5th Battalion, who passed away on November 21, 1917, at the age of 42;

William O'Dee from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on March 10, 1955, at the age of 67; Thomas O'Kelly from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on April 28, 1937, at the age of 56;

Thomas Peppard from Fingal 5th Battalion, who passed away on December 16, 1984, at the age of 90.

Edward Roach from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on February 21, 1963, at the age of 64;

Liam Stanies from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on November 2, 1918, at the age of 20;

Patrick Stephenson from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on April 6, 1960;

James Wilson from Fingal 5th Battalion, who passed away on October 23, 1967, at the age of 70;

Peter Wilson from Fingal 5th Battalion, who passed away on February 18, 1973;

Richard Balfe from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on October 20, 1967, at the age of 74; James Brennan from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on April 6, 1976, at the age of 85;

Frederick Brooks from C Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on December 21, 1954, at the age of 79.

John Byrne from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on July 2, 1954, at the age of 59;

John Clarke from Lusk Company, unfortunately we have no records of his death;

Captain Richard Coleman from Fingal 5th Battalion, who passed away on December 9, 1918, at the age of 28;

James Crenigan from Fingal 5th Battalion, who passed away on August 13, 1974, at the age of 74;

John Cullen from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on May 29, 1918, at the age of 22;

John Derrington from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on November 15, 1962, at the age of 90; Liam Derrington from D Company 1st Battalion Dublin Brigade, who passed away on February 18, 1943, at the age of 44; Finally, Peter "Cooty" Wilson from Fingal 5th Battalion, who was shot while holding a white flag to surrender on April 26, 1916, at the age of 41. He is buried in Dr. Steeven’s Hospital.


The event's second part occurs at 1pm at Dr. Steeven’s Hospital on Steeven’s Lane in Saint James, Dublin 8, D08 W2A8.

Both of these men are buried on the grounds of Dr Steeven's hospital. We will commemorate the 2 brave men on the day.
